The Situation in Japan

Right now, in the shadow of the development competition for countless pharmaceuticals and chemical substances, as well as meaningless experimental medicine, innumerable laboratory animals are being sacrificed. It is estimated that as many as 20 million mammals are used in laboratory experiments annually in Japan, but almost nothing is known about what actually goes on in the laboratories. The terrible pain and suffering of the animals continues to be hidden behind locked laboratory doors. The laboratories of Japan's universities and corporations refuse to show their experimental data and experiment facilities to the public. Furthermore, there are no laws at all in Japan to restrict cruel and meaningless animal experimentation, and thus the researchers can do whatever they want, whenever they want, and as much as they want.　There are no structures in place to monitor their activities, or make them stop.
